India’s apex industry chamber, FICCI, is organizing annual mega event of the direct selling industry DIRECT 2017.This sector is one of the fastest growing non- store retail formats, recording double – digit growth in the post – reform period. The growing Indian market has attracted a large number of Indian and foreign direct selling companies. Globally direct selling industry is a labour – intensive industry and has a positive socio – economic impact in terms of higher employment, women empowerment, skill development, financial independence, flexible timings and an improved ability to take care of the families. These factors combined with favourable demographics will lead to the direct selling industry witnessing unprecedented opportunity for growth in the coming years. To seize this opportunity, it is important for us to understand the evolving Indian consumer behaviour and Indian markets. This will be helpful in evaluating the options, strategy and approach for the key challenges faced by the industry, and way ahead thus enabling the growth of the industry.
DIRECT 2017 will focus on the guidelines released by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs and post the guidelines what are the benefits for the state governments in adopting the same. We will be preparing a FAQ’s for the government officials and consumers for the better understanding of this industry and a smooth implementation of the guidelines.
The past editions DIRECT 2014, 2015 and 2016 received an exceptionally overwhelmed response and witnessed a footfall of 1000plus. The events were well covered in more than 30 mainline newspapers in Delhi and outside. The efforts were appreciated by the Government, Industry and Media. Shri Ram Vilas Paswan, Hon’ble Union Minister of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution announced that he had convened an inter-ministerial meeting network to discuss entire gamut of direct selling as there is need to evolve a very transparent and consumer friendly business model for the sector during his address at DIRECT 2014. On the occasion Shri Paswan also released a study brought out by FICCI and KPMG on various aspects by Direct Selling sector in India. The hall was packed with people to listen Industry leaders giving their suggestions on issues & concerns pertaining to Direct Selling. Needless to mention that the conference was a huge success reaching out to innumerable. Shri Amitabh Kant then Secretary, Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion, Ministry of Commerce and Industry released the state specific reports during DIRECT 2015 “Direct selling; Mapping the industry across Indian states”. Smt Madhulika Shukul , Additional Secretary , Department of Consumer Affairs, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution released a report “ The contribution of Direct Selling in building India”.
