State Council Overview

Jammu and Kashmir, the northern-most state of India, shares its international border with China, Afghanistan and Pakistan. The state is well-connected with an international airport in Srinagar and two domestic airports in Jammu and Leh. J&K has agro-climatic conditions best suited for horticulture and floriculture. Horticulture is the mainstay of the rural economy, providing employment to large number of local inhabitants. The state has tremendous potential in the areas like mineral wealth; forestry; horticulture/agriculture; tourism; hydroelectric power; and value-added industrial potential. The state is naturally pollution-free and provides a salubrious environment to the resident population. Also, the natural beauty and picturesque locations have made it a traditional destination for international and domestic tourists.

The key sectors in the state include Gems & Jewellery, Handlooms and handicrafts, Healthcare, Horticulture, Hydro Power, Infrastructure, IT and Electronics, Food Processing, Sericulture, Technical Education, Textiles, Tourism

The thrust areas identified by the state government include food processing and agro-based industries, auto ancillaries, precision engineering, computer hardware and electronics, mineral exploration, eco-tourism, silk, handicrafts and leather goods.

Key industries in Jammu and Kashmir

  • Food processing and agro-based industries (excluding conventional grinding and extraction units) thrive in the state because of an excellent climate for horticulture and floriculture.
  • Handicrafts, the traditional industry of the state, has been receiving priority attention of the Government in view of its large employment base and exports potential.
  • The state is famous for some small-scale and cottage industries such as carpet weaving, silks, shawls, basketry pottery, copper and silverware, paper-machine and walnut wood.

The natural resources, coupled with fiscal incentives and the focus of the state government on improving industrial infrastructure, augmenting power generation and skill development make Jammu & Kashmir an attractive investment destination
