Identifying terrorists a problem: Rawat

The Hindu , Apr 13, 2018

To address the difficulty of the Army in locating and identifying terrorists from civilians, it was taking academicians to forward areas so that they can develop technologies to contain the challenge, Chief of Army Staff General Bipin Rawat said at the DefExpo here on Thursday.

He was speaking at the seminar ‘Defence Industrial Corridors: Unleashing the Start-ups and MSMEs Ecosystem’ organised by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) at the DefExpo venue at Thiruvidanthai near here. Identifying and locating terrorists “is a problem,” General Rawat said and elaborated: “There are problems in identification and surveillance. We want to stay ahead of the adversary, and the way to stay ahead is to use the knowledge base that we have ... the industry, young developers and MSMEs [ Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises]. We are confident that in future we will be able to develop indigenous solutions and development equipment in-house.”

“We are also taking young academicians to forward areas, meet our troops, understand their problems.”

The defence, industry and academia integration was being ensured. Also collaboration with IITs, engineering colleges and management institutes to get solutions to some of the Army’s problems were under way. “We are willing to open our workshops, our equipment to any one of you. Anybody can look at how our equipment, including imported ones, and if you can reverse engineering the same system and develop indigenous solutions, we will support in whatever way we can.”
