ARISE FICCI board chalks out strategy for disaster reduction in 2018 at its first Board meeting
NEW DELHI, 16 January 2018: Dr. Robert Glasser, Special Representative to Secretary General United Nations & Head of UNISDR stressed at the first board meeting of ARISE FICCI that for achieving the objectives of Sendai framework - reducing the loss of life and rapidly escalating cost of disasters - it is important to engage the private sector.
Dr. Glasser said, "There is a direct link between business opportunity and economic development in reducing disaster risks. When we consider that it is impossible to reduce poverty without economic growth and poverty is closely associated with exposure and vulnerability, even economic growth in its high quality growth can have huge impact on reducing poverty".
The Board reviewed the activities of ARISE FICCI since its inception and also chalked out the strategy, themes and action plan for implementation towards Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) in 2018.
Dr. Robert Glasser is Head of United Nations International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and Chairperson of ARISE GLOBAL.
ARISE is a UNISDR led network of private sector entities, whose members voluntarily commit to align with the Sendai Framework. ARISE stands for the UNISDR Private Sector Alliance for Disaster Resilient Societies. ARISE is committed to implementing the Sendai Framework with emphasis to ensure the private sector investments and operations are hazard resilient (risk sensitive), in collaboration with the public sector. The mission of ARISE is to create risk resilient societies by energizing the private sector in collaboration with the public sector and other stakeholders to achieve the outcome and goal of the Sendai Framework in a transparent and inclusive way that delivers local and measurable impact.
The meeting was attended by Mr. Kamal Kishore, Member, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), Ms Loretta Hieber-Girardet, Chief, UNISDR Asia and Pacific, Mr. Animesh Kumar, Deputy Chief, UNISDR Asia and Pacific, Mr. Nirankar Saxena, Dy. Secretary General, FICCI & Co-chair of Private Sector Advisory Group, UNISDR, Prof V K Sharma, Vice-Chairman, Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, Mr. L Mansingh, Former Chairman, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB), Mr. Anil Sinha, Founder Vice Chairman, Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, Brig (Dr) B K Khanna, Sr. Consultant, (DM) FICCI.
FICCI has worked over a decade in disaster management through its 32 flagship programs conducted on Chemical & Industrial Disaster Management done with National Disaster Management Authority, Government of India, Ministry of Environment and Forests, Government of India, Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board, Government of India, Host State Governments, Industries across the length and breadth of this country, which gave rise to the formation of ARISE FICCI under the UNISDR Global ARISE.
The CIDM initiatives has successfully propagated NDMA's guidelines on Chemical Disaster Management and build capacities amongst the industries to be better prepared to deal with disaster situations. Riding on the success of CIDM and FICCI�s long term association with key stakeholders in the area of DRR, both nationally and internationally.
