Dharmendra Pradhan to inaugurate Global Skills Summit tomorrow States share best practices on cluster-based job creation model as a precursor to GSS

NEW DELHI, 14 September 2018: FICCI jointly with the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship, Govt. of India is organising the 11^th edition of 'Global Skills Summit 2018' on 15^th September 2018 at FICCI, New Delhi. Mr. Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship and Petroleum & Natural Gas, Govt. of India will inaugurate the summit.

 

A precursor to Global Skill Summit program 'Virasat-The Heritage', was organised today, to share the best practices of select clusters which have potential to create better livelihood opportunities. Representatives from states viz. Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Delhi, Maharashtra, Assam and West Bengal shared their experiences on cluster based development.

 

Mr. Ajit B Chavan, Secretary and CEO, Textiles Committee, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India in his address said that sustainable policy interventions from all stakeholders are needed to protect the virasat or power heritage of India from becoming extinct. He added that the Textile Committee is taking the initiative of brand promotion and market linkages of textiles products and also implementing other schemes like India Handloom Brand, which is for promoting high quality handloom products.

 

Mr. Mohan Das Pai, Chairman, FICCI SKill Development Committee & Chairman, Manipal Global Education said that there is a need to connect artisans to market by using global technology and e-commerce, which will help in expanding the market. "We need to work to create brands for artisans & master craftsmen so that they can realise higher value and are able to create surplus which can be re-invested. Linking supply chains to the market and bringing in technology is the way forward."

 

Mr. Bijay Sahoo, Co-Chair, FICCI Skills Development Committee and Group president - HR, Reliance Industries Ltd. added that the cluster based approach will work better when education, skills and government support come together and work in a synchronised manner.

 

Ms Madhavi Das, Chief Management Service Officer, FSSAI, said that FSSAI is working with the street food vendors to train them and certify them to meet the standards of hygiene maintenance. She also informed that government�s target is to create about 150 clusters of street food within a year.

 

Mr. Ravi Marwaha, Partner, Small World; Mr. Anchal Jain, Co-Chair, Creative & Cultural Businesses Programme, IIM Ahmedabad;  Ms Pritha Dutt, Director, Empower Pragati; Ms Meghna Mishra, CEO, Rubber Skill Development Council, also shared their perspective on cluster development.
