Delhi to get 24 hours water supply in next 4-5 years: Arvind Kejriwal

NEW DELHI, 13 December 2019: Mr Arvind Kejriwal, Chief Minister, Delhi, today said that the city will get 24-hours clean water supply in the next 4-5 years, much like the supply of electricity.

Speaking at an interactive session organized by FICCI FLO, Mr Kejriwal said, "Within 4-5 years we will provide 24-hours water supply and clean water in your taps." Highlighting the plans of the Delhi government, Mr Kejriwal said that women's empowerment and safety will be one of the most important priorities of the government.

"If women are given the opportunity, they can take an active part in the country�s economy," said Mr Kejriwal.

Ms Harjinder Kaur Talwar, President, FLO, said, "Our vision is to be the thought leaders for working women of India, their voice for policy change and a guardian of their interests. FLO would like to be an integral part of the developmental agenda and growth process by contributing effectively towards making Delhi a better and safer place for everyone, especially women."

FLO submitted a set of recommendations on 'Menstrual Hygiene Management', based on a study conducted by it. The study highlights key issues of menstrual health in India.

The study has been collected from a sample size of 1,000 women from Delhi-NCR from various age groups, the majority of them belonging to the income group below Rs 30,000. 

Stigmatization has produced an immense gap in knowledge about menstruation and hygienic practices among women and girls, leading to increased health risks, absence from school and work, and loss of dignity. "Being one of the most recognized business organizations catering to women empowerment, it is pertinent that FLO plays a critical role in bridging this gap," Ms Talwar added.

Key recommendations:

1. Include sanitary pads under the category of necessary drugs and medical equipment. This will not only promote the rational use of sanitary pads but will also impact the regulation of procurement and supply along with reasonable pricing and ensuring quality control.

2. 'JANAUSHADHI SUVIDHA', the oxo-biodegradable sanitary napkin, introduced by the government, to be made available in Mohalla clinics in addition to Janaushadhi Kendras. This will ensure that people have both awareness about this pad and have access to it.

3. Private sector to collaborate with the government to help women set up self-help groups and manufacture sanitary pads.
