Significant increase in filing of IP applications a positive step: Secretary, DPIIT

NEW DELHI, 26 April 2022: Mr Anurag Jain, Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), today said that the significant increase in filing of intellectual property applications has had a very positive effect.

Addressing webinar on 'Leveraging India's Demographic Dividend Through IP', organized by FICCI, to commemorate the World Intellectual Property Day 2022, Mr Jain said that India has the 3^rd largest start-up ecosystem in the world with almost 80 startups being registered every day.

Mr Daren Tang, Director General, World Intellectual Property Organization, through his video message emphasized that today the young population is not just seeing the world they want to see but are taking steps to achieve it. He further highlighted that WIPO is focused on bringing out the potential of the youth and regularly engaging by organizing programs.

Mr Narendra Sabharwal, Chairman, FICCI IPR Committee & Former Deputy Director General, WIPO, said that young India is energetic and inspirational and are in a hurry to achieve things. He suggested that policy makers need to respond to the needs of young entrepreneurs to nurture and support their future endeavors.

Ms Shruti Singh, Joint Secretary, DPIIT, while chairing the technical session on Making India's youth IP-Savvy, underlined that the Indian innovators and entrepreneur were not confined to big cities but were emerging from small cities.

Mr Unnat Pandit, Controller General of Patent, Designs and Trademarks, said that Indian youth is committed to work and deliver the best quality for the betterment of the society. He said that the youth is providing IP driven solutions and IP by design should become the mantra for India.

The World IP Day celebration is organised every year by FICCI in line with WIPO's theme. The theme for this year was 'IP and Youth' which is relevant for India as majority of Indian population is under the age group of 35 years. With youth (18-29 yrs.) constituting 22% of the population and with a tech-driven world that rewards innovation, youth must understand the benefits of IPR in safeguarding their creations, the competitive edge it provides, and key role in nation building. The event saw the participation of eminent speakers like Commodore Amit Rastogi, Chairman and MD, NRDC, Jeet Vijay, CEO, MeITY Startup Hub, Mr Mudit Narayanan, Chief Technology Officer, Atal Innovation Mission, Dr Jatinder Kaur Arora, Executive Director, Punjab State Council for Science & Technology, Mr Mihir Rale, Chief Regional Counsel, Star India, John Cabeca, IP Counsellor for South Asia, USPTO among others.
