In recent years, the role of pre-packaged foods in Indian dietary practices has undergone a significant transformation. This change has been driven by rapid urbanization, rising incomes, and a growing emphasis on convenience. At the forefront, the recent release of third edition of the Dietary Guidelines for Indians, 2024 by ICMR-NIN emphasizes the importance of a wholesome and balanced diet. These guidelines are designed to promote overall health and nutrition and prevent unhealthy eating habits. Given the current developments and the dynamic transformation of "New India," which is achieving remarkable strides in food processing, it is crucial for key stakeholders-government, academia, regulators, industry, and consumer groups-to convene and discuss the role of pre-packaged foods in the framework of the Indian Dietary Guidelines. This collaborative approach will help ensure that the evolution of pre-packaged foods aligns with the nutritional needs and health priorities of the Indian population, fostering a balanced and sustainable dietary landscape.
