New Delhi, 18 June 2018: FICCI has played a considerable role in developing a relationship and connects between the Indian and Chinese entertainment industry and to deepen this relationship, it is participating in the Shanghai International Film Festival which began on 16th June 2018 in Shanghai and will conclude on 25th June 2018.
FICCI has partnered with AACTA Asia International Engagement Program in partnership with Shanghai International Film Festival to organise "China-India Film & Cultural Exchange Panel Discussion" at the sidelines of the Festival. This half-a-day seminar is being held on 19th June 2018 at Shanghai Film Group, Shanghai, China. The discussion would focus on how to leverage co-production between India and China. This discussion would be very much valuable in the backdrop of the recent signing of co-production treaty between India and China. There is a considerable scope of Indo-Chinese co-production and success of recent releases of Indian movies in China has shown the way.
Mr Advait Chandan, Director "Secret Superstar" and Mr Saket Chaudhary, Director of "Hindi Medium" and Ishan Saksena, CEO of B4U and producer of "Three Stories" are representing Indian entertainment industry in the seminar. The Chinese side will be represented by Daljit DJ Parmar, CEO of Extraordinary Entertainment, Executive Producer "Kung Fu Yoga", Renny Harlin, Director "Skiptrace" , and Da Ming, Director "What Women Want" .
FICCI is being represented by Ms Leena Jaisani, Assistant Secretary General and Head, Media & Entertainment Division. China is no stranger to Indian Cinema, and there is a growing popularity of Indian films in the country. The Bollywood hit Daniel"(2016) performed surprisingly well in China in the past year. Continuing the trend, "Secret Superstar" (2017) released in this January, has become the top-grossing imported film in 2018. The recent releases in China, Bajrangi Bhaijan"(2015), and "Hindi Medium" (2017) have also done very well. However, the fascination of Indian Cinema is not new to China, 'Caravan' (1971), starring Jeetendra, and Raj Kapoors 'Awaara' (1951) proved major hits after being dubbed into Chinese. Other Bollywood hits in China have been Raju Hirani's movies like '3 Idiots' (2009), 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S.' (2003) and 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' (2006).
FICCI which promotes co-productions among other policy initiatives to promote Indian films has been lobbying for the signing of co-production treaties of India with various countries and the treaty with China was one of them. An audiovisual co-production agreement was signed in 2014 between the Government of the Republic of India and the Peoples Republic of China. The treaty aims to bring the two countries together to pool their creative, artistic, technical, financial and marketing resources to co-produce films. It would help Indian audio-visual products to gain greater market access.
