Strategic Approach to Development in the North East Region
India’s North Eastern Region (NER), comprising Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura, holds a strategically important position as India’s gateway to Southeast Asia. The region is endowed with rich natural resources, unique biodiversity and vibrant cultural diversity, offering significant opportunities for economic growth and regional cooperation.
In recent years, focused policy attention and investments by the Government of India have accelerated efforts to improve connectivity and infrastructure across the region. Expansion of road, rail, air and inland waterway networks is enhancing mobility, strengthening logistics and integrating the Northeast more closely with national and international markets. Key infrastructure initiatives, including major bridges and railway expansion, are helping reduce travel time and improve accessibility.
The region also presents strong potential in sectors such as agro-processing, tourism and energy. Supportive policy frameworks, industrial incentive schemes and entrepreneurship initiatives aim to attract investment and promote enterprise development. Together, these efforts are contributing to a broader transformation of the Northeast into an emerging hub for investment, trade and sustainable economic development.
