Over the past decade, India has achieved significant milestones in the realm of public health, marking notable progress in enhancing life expectancy, curbing fertility rates, and mitigating maternal and child mortality rates. The country has made focused efforts to meet the targets set under Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Moreover, India has witnessed a discernible enhancement in the proportion of resources allocated to the public sector, reflecting a commitment to bolstering the nation's healthcare infrastructure.
Despite significant improvements in healthcare, India still lags behind many other developing countries in providing quality healthcare to its citizens. By 2029, India's population is projected to reach 1.5 billion, making it the world's most populous nation, surpassing China. This population growth brings twin challenges: a rapidly increasing geriatric population, expected to reach 230 million over next10-12 years, and a shifting disease pattern with a rising prevalence of both communicable and non-communicable diseases. To meet the desired healthcare infrastructure and access, India's total healthcare spending needs to increase to 6-7% of GDP.
The FICCI Health Services Committee, established in 2006, has been instrumental in fostering collaboration among stakeholders to build the foundation for high-quality healthcare through various initiatives. Factors such as increasing awareness, higher insurance penetration, and demographic shifts are expected to drive the growth of the healthcare sector in India.
Healthcare has become one of India's largest sectors, both in terms of revenue and employment. The sector has grown at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 22.52% between 2016 and 2022. The Indian healthcare market, which was valued at US$ 110 billion in 2016 is now projected to reach US$ 638 billion by 2025.
The Government of India, through its National Health Policy and with wide-ranged central schemes and programs, has been playing a crucial role in achieving the progress for the healthcare goals. The country has witnessed a transformative shift in healthcare policy and practice with government’s ambitious initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure across the country.
All these initiatives are complemented through collaborations with the private sector, non-profit organizations, healthcare start-ups and international partners, who have been instrumental in expanding access to advanced medical services, fostering innovation in healthcare delivery, improving healthcare outcomes and promoting health equity across the country.
For the healthcare sector to achieve sustainable growth, a well-defined partnership between the government and the private sector is crucial.
