Govt to soon launch National Language Technology Mission: Secretary, MeitY

NEW DELHI, 02 December 2020: Mr Ajay Prakash Sawhney, Secretary, Ministry of Electronics and IT, Govt of India yesterday said that to promote Indic languages on the internet, we as a nation including the industry, academia, research fraternity and the government have to work together in a concerted manner.

 

Addressing the virtual webinar 'Bhashantara 2020', organized by FICCI-ILIA (Indian Language Internet Alliance, jointly with MeitY and TDIL, Mr Sawhney said, "National Language Technology Mission is almost ready to go, and the Ministry is in touch with several stakeholders, including industry, academia, and researchers to give this initiative a final shape."

 

He further stated that the government has already launched various multilingual apps like Aarogya Setu, Digi-Locker, UMANG etc and will continue to take steps to further expand Indic languages in the country.

 

Prof Rajat Moona, Director, IIT- Bhilai said, "It is heartening to know FICCI-ILIA and MeitY have taken initiatives to address the immediate need to make available online content and information to all Indians."

 

He further said, "To scale up and utilize the capacity and capability, we need to have Indian Language-based programming languages and give more focus in these areas."

 

Dr Manish Gupta, Director, Google Research India highlighted on the importance of research and development in this sector along with the Google's initiatives like MuRIL, and StoryWeaver; Mr Virat Bhatia, Chairman, FICCI ICT and Digital Economy Committee emphasized on the role of FICCI-ILIA in the overall development of the ecosystem and Dr Ajay Data, Co-Chairman, FICCI Committee on ICT and Digital Economy emphasized on the challenges that the sector needs to overcome.

 

Over 300+ institutions from various cohorts including government bodies, technology companies, media and publishing houses, language services companies and academia deliberated to understand and develop an effective mechanism towards the development and usage of Indic language technologies in various socio-economic sectors further to allow the expansion of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
