Roundtable in Tokyo highlights regulatory initiatives to deepen foreign portfolio participation and cross-border flows

TOKYO, JAPAN. 19 JANUARY 2026 – FICCI, in collaboration with Mizuho Securities and NovaaOne Capital, organised an exclusive Roundtable in Tokyo with Mr Tuhin Kanta Pandey, Chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). The session brought together over 25 leading Japanese strategic and portfolio investors and corporates to discuss emerging opportunities and the regulatory developments shaping India’s investment landscape.

The dialogue, moderated by Mr Sunil Sanghai, Chair of the FICCI Capital Markets Committee, India, and Founder & CEO of NovaaOne Capital, focused on key themes, including India’s evolving capital market reforms, investor participation frameworks, and cross-border capital flows. Discussions highlighted efforts to improve access for Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) through digitised registration processes, the SWAGAT-FI Passport initiative, and a simplified Alternative Investment Fund (AIF) framework to facilitate greater foreign participation in Indian markets.

The Roundtable was also graced by Her Excellency Ms. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador-designate of India to Japan, who underscored the growing importance of India and Japan’s Special Strategic and Global Partnership in deepening financial cooperation and expanding bilateral investment.

Participants exchanged perspectives on long-term opportunities in India, the role of regulatory clarity in deepening market depth, and the contribution of ongoing digitisation initiatives to ease investing by foreign institutions. The collaborative platform reinforced India’s commitment to fostering investor-friendly policies, enhancing transparency, and strengthening ties with Japan’s financial and corporate community.

FICCI reaffirmed its commitment to serving as a catalyst for dialogue among policymakers, regulators, and investors, promoting initiatives that support the sustainable development of capital markets and deepen India–Japan economic engagement.
