Shaping tomorrow's connectivity Innovations in tunnel and bridge infrastructure
FICCI–CRISIL Knowledge Report: Engineering Connectivity: Innovations in Tunnel and Bridge Development
FICCI, in collaboration with CRISIL, has developed the Knowledge Report “Engineering Connectivity: Innovations in Tunnel and Bridge Development,” highlighting the transformative role of tunnels and bridges in strengthening India’s connectivity and supporting the vision of a Viksit Bharat.
The report examines India’s growing pipeline of tunnel and bridge projects across roads, railways, metros, strategic infrastructure and challenging terrains. It highlights major projects such as the Atal Tunnel, Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Tunnel and Banihal-Qazigund Tunnel, demonstrating how advanced infrastructure can enable all-weather connectivity and improve travel efficiency.
The report also explores advanced tunnelling technologies, innovative construction methods, digitalisation, BIM, digital twins, structural health monitoring and new-age materials to improve project efficiency, safety, durability and lifecycle performance.
A key focus is on strengthening project preparation, DPR quality, safety and risk management, sustainability, construction practices and asset management. The report also highlights the importance of knowledge sharing, industry–academia collaboration and skill development to build capabilities for India’s expanding tunnelling ecosystem.
Overall, the report provides an industry perspective on building safer, smarter, more sustainable and resilient tunnel and bridge infrastructure for India’s future connectivity needs.
