Electrifying the Energy Sector can decarbonize the world: Chairman & CEO, Schneider Electric

NEW DELHI, 08 September 2020: Dr Sangita Reddy, President, FICCI today said that "The use of solar energy as a source of power could help augment the rural healthcare infrastructure in India and has a potential to substitute the traditional grid-based systems in rural areas."

Addressing the 'Global CEOs Session: Driving down the cost of technology' during the 'First World Solar Technology Summit' Dr Reddy said, "Solar energy will help transition towards a low-carbon healthcare system and would also facilitate reliable and uninterrupted electricity supply critical for 24/7 emergency services, deliveries as well as inpatient and outpatient services."

Dr Reddy further said that solar energy has the potential to provide energy access to communities in rural and resource-constrained settings. "It can play a vital role as an enabler for the healthcare industry in areas that have no or inadequate access to grid-connected power," she emphasized. FICCI is spearheading policy advocacy and thought leadership for the transition to clean energy, solar energy applications, sustainable mobility, added Dr Reddy.

Mr Jean-Pascal Tricoire, Chairman & CEO, Schneider Electric said: "Electrifying the energy sector can decarbonize the world." He said, "this is not a period of energy transition but energy revolution."  The focus today is managing the change and we must not concentrate only on renewable but on digital, as it is the way to a smarter world. He further said that India is in a leading position to change this equation of energy and the country has had an incredible combination of electricity and digital technology. He stated that the cost of the new solution must be lower than the solutions currently with us.

Mr Tricoire said ISA is an essential platform for dialogue and India is a country with a dynamic and young population that has a passion for technology and innovation.

Mr Eric Rondolat, Chief Executive Officer, Signify said that we strongly believe that the world is in an energy transition, the UN Sustainable goals will be used as our strategy compass as per our commitment to climate control by reducing global carbon emissions.  We also believe that the expansion of solar power lighting system will provide a very effective opportunity to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Anand G Mahindra, Chairman & Managing Director, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. said, "India has done remarkably well in the solar energy vertical and we consider Solar Energy as the technology of choice."  He said that India is a world leader in Renewable energy, and it is the lowest-cost producer of solar power in the world. Solar Energy in India can compete on its economic merit.

A sustainable domestic manufacturing industry can create direct and indirect jobs in India but for us, cost competitiveness is going to be the key. The lowest cost per unit of innovation takes place in India. Solar Technology is made for India and must be made by India, said Mr Mahindra.

Mr Bertrand Piccard, Chairman, Solar Impulse Foundation, said, "To be successful in this vertical we must consume less and be more efficient. The regulations in every country need to change so that people are not allowed to pollute the environment."

Mr Uday Kotak, CEO & Founder, Kotak Mahindra Bank, said, "This is a unique initiative by India and France to create a robust body in International Solar Alliance and this is the time for solar energy." He further added, "Today India is producing 88 GW of renewable energy, which in the next two years will become 175 GW, which means we double capacity." The speed at which solar is growing will be ahead of all the forms of renewable power in India, he said.

Ms Walburga Hemetsberger, CEO, Solar Power Europe, Belgium, said, "We want to make sure that Solar is the leading energy source by 2030 in Europe. When it comes to Solar, we have seen incredible cost reduction since 2010, solar has been the cheapest energy technology in many parts of the world. She further said that we are all united in the strong will to save our climate to make it a better place to live in.
