Women's Parliamentarians united across party lines to support Greater 50 initiative of FICCI

NEW DELHI, 17 December 2021: FICCI today organized a panel discussion with women Members of Parliament on 'Greater 50: Role in Economy & Governance' at FICCI's 94th Annual Convention.

In a session moderated by Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director Business Today and News Director AajTak the women parliamentarians made an impassioned plea for greater role for women in decision making, affirmative action and breaking patriarchal mindsets. This echoes FICCI's Greater Fifty initiative.

The parliamentarians underlined the need for a collective voice between political, business and media leaders to mainstream women's empowerment in a collective voice.

Ms Aparajita Sarangi, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from BJP, noted that women with their hard work, strength and perseverance can make a mark in politics, even if it is a man's world. She mentioned about various initiatives for women of the government including the MUDRA scheme.

Ms Sushmita Dev, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from AITC mentioned about the need for Women's Reservation Bill for ensuring women's representation in the policy- making of the country. She noted that safety concerns and violent nature of politics keep women away from electoral politics. She emphasized on the need for affirmative action where women's representation rights are unbiased without tokenism of electing women from families of male politicians.

Ms Priyanka Chaturvedi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Shiv Sena stated that the course of politics is changing based on women votes and their issues. She mentioned that women need to be involved in decision making. She also congratulated FICCI on mainstreaming the conversation to create a gender equal world.

Ms Jothimani S, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from INC remarked about the importance of national policy measures to involve women in decision making. She noted that political parties need to have 50 percent women's reservation in order to bring 33 percent women's representation in the Parliament and gender finance is a key component towards it.

Mr Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director, Business Today & News Director, India Today and Aajtak remarked that only 14.6 percent of managerial positions are held by women and 22 percent of gender gap exists in political empowerment of women.

Dr Jyotsna Suri and Mr Harshavardhan Neotia, Co-Chairs of FICCI Forum of Parliamentarians and Past Presidents FICCI welcomed the suggestions by the Members of Parliament and assured that FICCI would continue to work towards enhancing the role opportunities for women.
