Dec 17, 2021
NEW DELHI, 17 December 2021: FICCI today organized a panel discussion with women Members of Parliament on 'Greater 50: Role in Economy & Governance' at FICCI's 94th Annual Convention.
In a session moderated by Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director Business Today and News Director AajTak the women parliamentarians made an impassioned plea for greater role for women in decision making, affirmative action and breaking patriarchal mindsets. This echoes FICCI's Greater Fifty initiative.
The parliamentarians underlined the need for a collective voice between political, business and media leaders to mainstream women's empowerment in a collective voice.
Ms Aparajita Sarangi, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from BJP, noted
that women with their hard work, strength and perseverance can make a mark in
politics, even if it is a man's world. She mentioned about various initiatives
for women of the government including the MUDRA scheme.
Ms Sushmita Dev, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from AITC mentioned
about the need for Women's Reservation Bill for ensuring women's representation
in the policy- making of the country. She noted that safety concerns and
violent nature of politics keep women away from electoral politics. She
emphasized on the need for affirmative action where women's representation
rights are unbiased without tokenism of electing women from families of male
politicians.
Ms Priyanka Chaturvedi, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from Shiv Sena
stated that the course of politics is changing based on women votes and their
issues. She mentioned that women need to be involved in decision making. She
also congratulated FICCI on mainstreaming the conversation to create a gender
equal world.
Ms Jothimani S, Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha from INC remarked about
the importance of national policy measures to involve women in decision making.
She noted that political parties need to have 50 percent women's reservation in
order to bring 33 percent women's representation in the Parliament and gender
finance is a key component towards it.
Mr Rahul Kanwal, Executive Director, Business Today & News Director,
India Today and Aajtak remarked that only 14.6 percent of managerial positions
are held by women and 22 percent of gender gap exists in political empowerment
of women.

Parliamentarians and Past Presidents FICCI welcomed the suggestions by the
Members of Parliament and assured that FICCI would continue to work towards
