Current Global Leadership Crisis an Opportunity for India to Emerge as a Global Leader: Dr Ian Bremmer

Dec 17, 2021

NEW DELHI, 17th December 2021: Mr Uday Shankar, President, FICCI in a fireside chat session on 'Current Geopolitical Situation', with Dr Ian Bremmer, President, Eurasia Group and GZERO Media, today at FICCI's Annual Convention and 94th AGM, pointed out that India-US strategic and economic partnership is one of defining engagements of the world, which has the potential to change the global landscape.

Responding on the global trends, which businesses need to watch out for, Dr Bremmer stated that globalization is unwinding and is on the decline due the lack of trust between two leading economies of the world, namely China and USA. The decline of middle class across the globe is palpable and the situation is bound to get worse owing to pandemic and governments taking populist stance. However, this forms a conducive backdrop for leadership opportunities outside Washington or Beijing, and India surely is the front runner here, he added.

Dr Bremmer further added that disruptive technology and innovation are something which India can bank on to come out winning and emerge as major leader within the global order.

Further on the issue of pandemic and its impact, Dr Bremmer said that India is a definite superpower when it comes to vaccine manufacture and fight against COVID-19 and is already playing a proactive role.

Another area which was focussed on during the interaction was Climate Change and ESG. Dr Bremmer unequivocally stated that the developed countries had the moral obligation to do the major heavy lifting rather than expect developing countries to change overnight.

On the issue of India-US bilateral relations, Dr Bremmer felt that India cannot be explicitly considered as an ally of United States. Indian global engagements go across the political and ideological divide making it an able contender for global leadership role. He envisaged in the days to come global politics will move away from multilateral forums to mini lateral engagements.

The interaction concluded with Dr Bremmer pointing out that the headlines are scarier than reality and there are definite solutions, which are available for the persisting global leadership crisis.
