Reducing weight of steel by using Vanadium can help decarbonize steel industry: Additional Industrial Advisor, Ministry of Steel

Industrial Advisor, Ministry of Steel, Govt of India today said that
reducing the weight of steel by using Vanadium can help decarbonize the steel
industry. He also added that there is an urgent need to develop critical
elements in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Addressing the webinar on 'Developments on Metallurgy & Applications of Vanadium Containing Steel', organized by FICCI, Mr Singh said that it is estimated that vanadium helps reducing environmental burden totalling 185 million metric tons of Co2 on an annual basis.
Mr Jayant Acharya, Co-Chair, FICCI Steel Committee and Deputy Managing Director, JSW Steel Ltd said, "Global demand for vanadium has been skyrocketing but there was a deficit of 17,300 metric tonnes between demand and supply 2017 onwards. Government needs to encourage and incentivize the production of vanadium in the country, especially under the National Mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat."
Mr V R Sharma, Co-Chair, FICCI Steel Committee and Vice-Chairman, Jindal Steel & Power Ltd said that there is a need to go for higher strength steel, while also reducing the weight of steel. He added that the steel industry and metallurgists must find ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions of the industry and help mitigate climate change.
Dr Mukesh Kumar, Director, SRTMI said that steel industry will benefit by making use of vanadium alloyed steel. He further stated that there is a need to develop steel in a manner that the overall weight of the steel is minimized. It can be achieved by increasing the strength of steel via elements like vanadium.
Dr S K Jha, Chairman & Managing Director, Mishra Dhatu Nigam Ltd. said, "Vanadium is a powerful and highly versatile strategic metal that needs attention against supply chain disruptions, price etc. Alloying with Vanadium produces stronger and tougher steels that increase efficiencies, reduce fuel consumption and lessens harmful air emissions."
Mr Pankaj Satija, Co-Chair, FICCI Mining Committee and Managing Director, Tata Steel Mining Ltd. said that the Vanadium market is going through structural changes guided by new environmental regulations which is affecting demand and supply. He added that exploration is the key since infrastructure creation is on the rise, therefore, Vanadium supply must be ensured.
Dr David N Crowther, Technical Consultant, Vanitec Ltd., Dr. Bhagyadhar Bhoi, Chief Scientist, CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology, Dr Subhankar Dasbakshi, Principal Technologist, Tata Steel Ltd. and Dr. Anil Dhawan, Director General, Alloy Steel Producers Association of India also participated in the webinar.
