NEW DELHI, 08 December 2023: Addressing FICCI’s 96TH Annual General Meeting and Annual Convention, on the theme- ‘The World’s Growth Engine’, Ms Rani Rampal, Former Captain, Indian Women Hockey Team, noted that the first edition of Khelo India Para Games 2023 is being organized from 10 -17 December 2023 across seven sports disciplines.
Addressing the session on ‘Khelo India: The Transformation of Sports’ on Day 1 of FICCI’s AGM and Annual Convention, Ms Rampal further said that the Khelo India Scheme of the Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports (MYAS), Govt of India, was a wonderful initiative at the grassroot level that has brought transformations in Indian sports. The Para Games has enabled a wonderful platform for specially- abled players, she added.
Mr Akash Chopra, Former Indian Cricketer, said that Khelo India has enabled opportunities of India becoming one of the greatest sporting nations of the world. He further elucidated that India’s young population represents a significant demographic dividend that has excelled in various fields; however, a lot of potential still remains untapped in sports.
“It is imperative to create adequate infrastructure, like well-maintained public playgrounds, sports facilities, and community centres to enable the youth to discover their potential in their choice of sports. This requires collaborative efforts from local authorities, educational institutions, and sports organizations,” he added.
Mr Lokesh Sharma, Managing Director, Twenty First Century Media Pvt Ltd, mentioned, “To make any sports big, we need a big win like India's Cricket World Cup win in 1983. The state of Odisha has been very supportive towards sports and has taken several leading initiatives to set an example.”
He further added that sports should not be treated as a career but as a great character-building exercise.
The panel discussion was moderated by Mr Charu Sharma, Commentator, Compere, Quizmaster, and Co-founder, Pro Kabaddi League. He noted that sports is a massive nation developer and a valuable soft power.
Mr Shashwat Goenka, Chair, FICCI Young Leaders Forum and Vice Chairman, RP Sanjiv Goenka Group, also a stakeholder in several Indian sports companies, emphasised the important role business of sports for the maximum outreach and proliferation in the country.
