NEW DELHI, 30 July 2024: Mr Jitin Prasada, Minister of State for Commerce & Industry and Electronics & Information Technology, Govt of India today said that the PLI schemes, launched by the government, are aimed not only to enhance India’s manufacturing capabilities and exports but also paving way for India to become a manufacturing hub. “Even before the full disbursement of PLI scheme has happened, we are seeing a good amount of investment happening in plant and machinery, creation of new jobs with increase in production”, he added.
Addressing the ‘10th FICCI Awards & Conference for Excellence in Quality Systems’, Mr Prasada said, “The good part is that in spite of the PLI scheme, not incentivizing exports and no disbursements happened for exports, we have ensured 4 lakh crores of exports. It shows that our products are of quality standards and acceptable around the world.” He further stated that the government will give the necessary thrust and support to ensure India does become the manufacturing hub.
Keeping in view India's vision of becoming 'Atmanirbhar', Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Schemes for 14 key sectors have been announced with an outlay of Rs. 1.97 lakh crore (over US$26 billion) to enhance India's Manufacturing capabilities and Exports. As on date, 755 applications have been approved across14sectors.Investment of Rs. 1.23 lakh crore have been realized till March 2024 resulting in employment generation of around 8 lakhs.
“We ensure that we get the best technology transfer, we will ensure that the value addition in our products happen. In next five years, I can assure you that in the air conditioner sector, 75 per cent of it will be indigenized, and India will be producing quality standard air conditioners,” he noted.
Highlighting the importance of the MSME sector, Mr Prasada said that it one of the priority sectors for the government. He said that the recent Budget announcements also focus the MSME as it has the potential to create more jobs. “MSMEs, are the ones that are going to be driving the employment and the job creation market in India and as a result of these manufacturing hubs that globally competitive champions that we are going to make through these PLI schemes, the cascading effect will be that the MSMEs will grow, and they will get the necessary fill up, which is much required in our country today.
Speaking on role of Artificial Intelligence and technology, the Minister stated that the AI mission has been cleared by the Cabinet, and we are in the process of finalizing the various pillars of the AI technology. “We do have the cutting-edge manpower, skills, especially in the IT sector, and with that, we can streamline a lot of our production along with the quality to become globally competitive,” he added.
Earlier during the day, Mr Sajiv, Joint Secretary, DPIIT stated that standards, testing, quality control, certification are strategic tools to maintain and enhance the trust in the quality of India’s manufacturing, thereby catalyzing exports and supporting economic development. We are strengthening the technical regulation regime in the country to promote public health, safety and environment and discourage deceptive trade practices. “The two main pillars for any manufacturing driven economy are quality and productivity. The emphasis in the country should be on quality manufacturing. We need to strengthen our capability and ensure that our industry is able to harness standards as a key competitive advantage,” he added. From 2023 till now, DPIIT has issued 45 Quality Control Orders for 188 products as a part of its initiative to promote quality.
Mr Shyam Bang, Chair, FICCI Manufacturing Excellence Committee and Former Chairman, NABCB said that industry should improve its own performance through collaboration. “Instead of taking an approach of inspection and rejection, it should adopt an approach of trust, handholding, and information sharing to enhance the performance,” he added.
Mr Alok Bansidhar Shriram, Senior Executive Committee, Member, FICCI & President, AIOE and Senior Managing Director & CEO, DCM Shriram Industries Ltd said that we must adopt innovative approaches to achieve quality management. “We need to think beyond traditional methods and embrace new technologies, processes, and ideas that can elevate our quality standards to new heights in the future,” he added.
