Need to align our thought process with Codex Alimentarius Commission, particularly in the realm of WTO and food safety: CEO, FSSAI

NEW DELHI, 20 October 2024: Mr G. Kamala Vardhana Rao, Chief Executive Officer, FSSAI last week while addressing the ‘Codex Master Class’ organized by FICCI and FSSAI, emphasized on the importance of safe and nutritious food. “CODEX being an international body, we need to align our thought process with Codex Alimentarius Commission, particularly in the realm of WTO and food safety. Every country has its own robust mechanisms for setting standards and enforcement procedures,” he added.
Mr Rao urged collaboration between industry stakeholders and the government, emphasizing the importance of data generation and assimilation for Codex submissions. He further highlighted the crucial role of industrial representation and associations like FICCI, noting that their active participation can help the government formulate better policies and establish significant standards.
Dr Alka Rao, Advisor (Science & Standards & Regulations), FSSAI and Codex Contact Point, India emphasized the importance of the food industry's representation at the global level, stressing that its voice must be heard to address pressing concerns.
Dr Rao urged FICCI to implement Codex classes on a national scale, emphasizing that these initiatives will enhance industry knowledge and capacity, positioning India more prominently in global discussions. She proposed the development of thematic sessions to strengthen India’s voice in international food security dialogues. “It’s not only about Codex; we must actively integrate all our activities within the WTO-SPS framework to build a compelling narrative on the global stage,” she added.
Dr Rao urged the industry to adopt a proactive stance by developing more new work proposals which can only be accomplished through active participation and engagement at the international level.
Dr Jasvir Singh, Chair, FICCI Codex Cell stated that the master class stands as a testament to FICCI's unwavering dedication to advancing this crucial cause. He emphasized on India’s significant contribution to Codex through active involvement in various Codex committees and working groups.
Officials from NCCP, along with members of the Codex Cell (CIFTI-FICCI), provided an overview of the fundamentals of Codex, including the standards-setting procedure, India’s achievements in Codex, codex and international standards, and the principles of risk analysis.
