The Indian Pharmaceutical Sector:
- The pharmaceutical industry, currently valued at USD 50 Bn and is expected to reach USD 130 Bn by 2030.
- The Indian pharmaceutical sector grew at a modest CAGR of 6.6 percent from 2016 to 2019 and it is predicted to rise at a CAGR of 12.3 percent from 2020 to 2030, attaining USD130 billion goal.
- The Indian pharmaceutical industry is the world's third largest by volume and fourteenth largest in terms of value.
- The COVID-19 pandemic has shown that India can not only innovate but also rapidly distribute time-critical drugs to every part of the globe.
- Indian medicines are preferred worldwide because of the low price and high quality, thereby rightly making the country the “pharmacy of the world”.

- For the period 2021-22, export of drugs and pharma products stood at USD 24.6 Bn.
- India supplies over 50% of Africa’s requirement for generics, ~40% of generic demand in the US and ~25% of all medicine in the UK. India also accounts for ~60% of global vaccine demand, and is a leading supplier of DPT, BCG and Measles vaccines. 70% of WHO’s vaccines (as per the essential Immunization schedule) are sourced from India.
- The domestic pharmaceutical industry includes, more than 24,000 registered pharma SMEs (Small and medium enterprises), and a whole network of 3,000 drug companies and ~10,500 manufacturing units.
- The pharmaceutical industry in India offers 60,000 generic brands across 60 therapeutic categories. Major segments of Indian Pharmaceutical Industry include generic drugs, OTC medicines, bulk drugs, vaccines, contract research & manufacturing, biosimilars and biologics.
FICCI Pharma: Key Activities
- FICCI Pharma Team work closely with the government on policy issues, enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and expanding business opportunities for industry through a range of specialized services and global linkages. It also provides a platform for sector specific consensus building and networking. It has been actively involved in organizing stakeholder consultations/Roundtable Meetings, conferences and seminars, providing an opportunity for interaction between the industry and the policy makers, to identify the various impediments to the growth and functioning of the industry and to come out with prospective solutions.
- FICCI in partnership with the Department of Pharmaceuticals (DoP), Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers organizes the "India Pharma and India Medical Devices" annual flagship event in the pharma & Medical Device sector. This event provides a unique platform to the stakeholders to deliberate and address key issues, identify challenges and chart a road map for India to take a rightful place as a preferred destination of choice for Drug Discovery, Research & Development and Manufacturing to become globally competitive.
