Role of Natural Gas in India's Transition Journey to Clean Energy
July 2023 | Hydrocarbons
In the midst of a rapidly evolving energy landscape and the pressing need for sustainability, the oil and gas industry continues to play a pivotal role in meeting the ever-growing global energy demand. As the world shifts towards cleaner energy sources, India has made a steadfast commitment to embrace clean energy and achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. To fulfill this commitment, India is actively engaged in implementing its COP26 commitments while simultaneously developing strategies for COP27. This transition towards clean energy encompasses multiple sectors that are integral to India's economy, including agriculture, building, cooking, large industries, telecom & IT, transport, power, and the oil & gas sector.
Within this ongoing energy transition, natural gas emerges as a critical transition fuel for India. Natural gas offers several advantages, including its price competitiveness compared to alternative fuels, alignment with government policies supporting clean energy, and its potential to contribute to India's net-zero goals. The gas industry holds immense promise for the future, presenting significant opportunities for growth and development. However, realizing this potential requires the collaborative efforts and extensive support of all stakeholders involved.
Over the past few years, the Indian government has taken proactive measures by introducing reforms aimed at stimulating natural gas consumption. These reforms have provided a much-needed impetus to the sector. However, for the gas industry to thrive and flourish, it is imperative that continuous support is extended from various stakeholders.
By embracing the essence of the energy transition and recognizing the role of natural gas as a key transition fuel, India can effectively navigate the challenges and seize the opportunities presented by the evolving energy landscape.
