The role of crop-protection industry in driving sustainability in the agriculture sector
October 2024 | Agriculture
The agriculture sector is crucial to India's economy, contributing over 18% of GDP and supporting 42.3% of the population. However, challenges like climate change and shrinking landholdings demand sustainable practices that align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly those targeting poverty, hunger, and climate action.
India is a leading global producer of crop-protection chemicals, which are essential in boosting crop yields and reducing losses for both domestic and export markets. Despite this, the sector faces challenges, including regulatory hurdles and public concerns over the misuse of chemicals. In response, the industry is increasingly adopting sustainable methods like integrated pest management and biopesticides, contributing to biodiversity preservation and reduced ecological impact.
Government efforts, including support for organic farming, technological innovations, and agri-startups, further emphasize sustainable agriculture. Agri-biologicals, with their natural origins and safety, are gaining popularity globally and are expected to play a critical role in India’s agricultural sustainability.
To ensure long-term growth, the government must enhance education for farmers on safe chemical use and strengthen regulatory oversight. Collaboration between the government and private sector is key to creating a high-yielding, sustainable agricultural system.
